My name is Nathan Marshall; I had a wonderful suburban childhood, raised by married parents without any abuse or mistreatment. However, out of simple curiosity with friends, I discarded that stable foundation. In 1998 I began experimenting with substances like Cocaine and LSD. These didn't quite take me where I wanted to go, which brought me to September 11, 2001. While the world watched the towers, I was in a parking lot using heroin for the first time. That single choice initiated a 25-year descent into chaos. While it would take a lengthy seminar to explain every detail, here is the short version. At parties, when others went home at 2 AM as supplies ran low, I couldn’t stop. I would steal wallets or credit cards just to keep the high going. It felt like there was no off switch. At 19, I entered the Allegheny County Jail for theft. I went in blind without a lawyer or a clue of what to expect. It was a terrifying week for a first-timer. Soon after, I faced serious charges: Possession with Intent to Deliver, Aggravated Assault on an Officer, and Fleeing and Eluding. I met with one of the county’s top lawyers who told me honestly that I didn't stand a chance at trial. When my mother and I asked simple questions about what happens after sentencing—like when we could talk on the phone or where I would be sent—this prominent 'Officer of the Court' simply replied, 'I do not know.' I was furious. How could a high-priced attorney not explain the reality of my future? Over the next 25 years, I learned exactly what happens through four separate terms in State Prison. This is not a flex, but a warning. I have made it my mission to ensure others don't have to walk this path.
